Secure Web Hosting

Does web hosting secure my website?

Does web hosting secure my website? If yes please let me know where I can get the best web host I need to secure my website thank you.

And isn’t encrypted server and webhosting the same thing what’s the difference?

A website is actually a collection of pieces of software and hardware that are joined together into an entire system.

Any one of those pieces could have a security vulnerability which could make your website insecure.

Some of the components in a website are:
1) the server-side scripting language (PHP, ASP, Java, ColdFusion, Perl, etc.)
2) the HTTP server (Apache, IIS, Lighttpd, etc)
3) the database software (MySQL, MS SQL, Oracle, PostGres SQL, etc.)
4) the Operating System (Linux, Windows, Solaris, BSD, etc.)
5) the web applications (WordPress, Joomla, VBulletin, phpBB, etc.)

Web hosting companies vary a lot in what they provide but some will do almost everything for you. They will make sure that the operating system, the database software, the HTTP server, the scripting language and sometimes even the web applications are always up to date. Some will make sure that every part of the server is configured securely and if you still get someone taking over your machine, they will restore it from backups and patch the vulnerability.

Unfortunately, web hosting companies that do all this tend to be rather expensive. Cheaper hosts tend to do less. Some hosts will give you a network port and a power socket and expect you to supply everything else yourself.

Ask your web host exactly what they do and what they provide.

Encryption in websites usually refers to SSL. You can identify SSL pages because they have a URL that starts with https:// instead of http://. With SSL pages both the request for the page and the response containing the page are encrypted before leaving the computer and not decrypted until the reach their destination. This means that any sensitive information (such as your user’s passwords) cannot be read by anyone other than them and you. Even though the traffic goes through their ISP, no one at the ISP could read their password.

The short versions of both answers are:

1) Some webhosts will secure your server. You will have to ask yours whether they do.
2) An SSL certificate provides extra security for your website’s visitors. It also provides security for you when you are logging in to your own website.

Web Hosting Services Comparison

Yahoo small business let me down~ Where can I go to get REAL comparison of web hosting sites?

I work for a small nonprofit that has a website and our email accounts tied together through Yahoo Small Business. Apparently they shut us down for violating their Terms of Service. They didn’t warn us they just shut us down. After 3 hours on the phone they can’t tell me what they think we did to violate terms of service but sent me to a form on the abuse page and directed me to ask them to reinstate my account. Now I have to wait 48 hours to see if they will.

We save wildlife and help build parks! The only thing we do is send out emails to the folks that tell us they want us to email to them literally one to three times a month.

So we are moving on- I need to know where to get an unbiased and current comparison of web site hosts. I need to know how to go about transferring a web site from one host to another. I also want to encourage everyone to backup any needed information off of your yahoo just in case yahoo does this to you. At this point we may loose our whole data base.

Yes. I have heard of compliants from some of my clients before about Yahoo Small Business and that is why many have left. Many have migrated to Microsoft Office Live Small Business to build their online presence.

While I cannot give you a website that gives you an unbiased and current comparison of web site hosts (if there’s even such a thing), I could tell you a bit about Office Live Small Business. Transferring your website to Office Live is very easy. Sinec you have a website already, it’s a simple drag and drop process of moving the HTML/CSS/javascript/image files over to Office Live via its web folder However, you may want to consider using it’s online web creation tool to redesign your site which allows you to create a website without the need to know how to do HTML/CSS coding.

This is a free service that provides 500MB of storage and it it an all-in-one internet toolkit that includes, free email, contact manager (very useful for a non-profit), business applications, and also add-ons such as email marketing and store manager. While it’s targeted at small businesses, it works very well for personal sites, fan sites, hobbies, church, charities, non-profits, etc. Try it out:
